Brendan Jamison was commissioned by Ove Arup & Partners International to create a portrait of their founder. The entire artwork has been created from recycled bottle tops, collected by staff during recycling week in September 2019. Jamison cut and carved the bottle caps to create the distinctive features of his face.
With headquarters in London, the company was founded in 1946 by Sir Ove Arup (1895-1988), design engineer for architectural icons such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Sidney Opera House. Ove Arup & Partners International has over 14,000 staff in 92 offices worldwide, making it one of the largest engineering companies on the planet.
On the lower left of the portrait, a quote by Ove Arup reads:
"We must look beyond the narrow object and ask ourselves: What would happen if everybody else did what we do. Would that serve humanity?”

The plastic lids used in the artwork were collected by staff during recycling week in September 2019 and the portrait was created by the artist Brendan Jamison. |

Brendan Jamison has created this series of works in response to desert drone strikes in the Middle East. The plastic block artworks begin with an aesthetic of pristine surfaces and glorious vibrancy. However, as the series progresses, the imagery becomes more disruptive and distorted as the materials are burnt, melted and torn apart through gun fire. Like the devastation caused by war itself, the deliberate destruction of the plastic blocks reflect the brutality of bombs and bullets, on both the human body and the environment. However, the absence of figures from each scene references the news footage of such drone strikes whereby it often appears like a scene from a movie, rather than real life. The imagery can also be read as stills from a violent computer game whereby human life becomes extinguished in the blink of an eye. The series reflects on the horrors and tragedy of contemporary warfare but it also explores how we become seduced by the spectacle and hypnotic allure of the warm colours of an explosive detonation, as seen from the comfort and safety of our own homes. |

2013: TEUFELSBERG SPY STATION SERIES

From September 2012 to April 2014, Brendan Jamison worked on a project in response to Teufelsberg Field Station Berlin, a secret listening station built during the Cold War era. It is located in the Grunewald, Berlin’s largest forest, and sits on the peak of Teufelsberg (translated as Devil's Mountain), an artificial hill built from the rubble of the bombed buildings of the Second World War.
Field Station Berlin was built in 1963 by the American National Security Agency and shared with British Intelligence. In early 1992, the intelligence community vacated Teufelsberg following the end of the Cold War, however, the work undertaken there remains classified. From the outset the field station was clouded in secrecy. Over the years, some of these mysteries have been revealed, whilst others have become mixed with myth and imagination...
